The authors’ research included contacting 168 of the 250 members and acquiring personal photographs and artifacts from them.
The authors’ contacted 168 of the 250 members. (From 1944 to 1992, at least 77 members had passed away.) The members shared stories, photographs and artifacts. It’s been over thirty years since the publication of Chinese America: History and Perspectives 1993 and In the Shadow of the Tiger. (Both publications are out-of-print. On the secondary market In the Shadow of the Tiger has sold upwards to a hundred dollars or more.) As far as I know, nearly all members of the 407th have passed away.
Information about most members was found at Ancestry.com through military records, passenger lists, censuses, naturalization petitions, city directories, yearbooks and newspapers. Other sources included Genealogy Bank, Old Fulton New York Postcards, California Digital Newspaper Collection and the Internet Archive.
There are 34 groups; click the bold heading to read. The first 29 groups are profiles arranged in alphabetical order. Group 30 is about two recruiters, references and an index of members. The English text of Gung Ho was transcribed and distributed in groups 31 (numbers 1–5), 32 (numbers 6–10) and 33 (numbers 11–14, 20, 22, 23). Statistics make up group 34. (In the book Gung Ho was mentioned on pages v, vi, vii, viii, 1, 15, 17, 33, 75, 76, 221 and 222. Available issues were reproduced on pages 75 and from 77 to 205. The demographics of the 407th appeared on pages 15 to 17.)

Early in my online research I came across references to my uncle in Chinese America: History and Perspectives 1993 and In the Shadow of the Tiger. I acquired copies of both publications. Soon I discovered there were members of the 407th who had connections to my family. My Uncle Howe T. Jay drove a truck for the 407th. An issue of Gung Ho said he was visited by his father, Jay W. Rapp, at Patterson Field. Howe was the grandson of Jay Yoon, (my great grandfather) the oldest of seven siblings. The next sibling was Jay Say who was the “grandfather” of James G. Jay, a paper son whose family name was Quan. Kenneth Mah’s sister, Margaret, was the stepmother of my cousin, Jay Y. Sun, Jr., a Korean War veteran, whose great grandfather was Jay Yoon. My father, Oak (Howe’s younger brother) received an October 26, 1944 V-Mail from Toy F. Lee. In my father’s scrapbook was the Arizona Republic, June 27, 1949 article about Grey K. Toy’s wedding. (Information about my father is here and here.)
